
GHANA SOLAR ECLIPSE
DAY 1
ARRIVE IN ACCRA, GHANA
Arrive in Accra,
Ghana. Transfer from airport to your hotel. Welcome drink and orientation. Dinner
and overnight at your Hotel in Accra.
DAY 2
VOLTA RIVER BOAT
CRUISE
Breakfast at hotel. Depart for Akosombo Port to cruise on the largest
man-made lake in the world, Lake Volta. Aboard the "Dodi Princess", you will dance
to the sweet sounds of live highlife music played by the cruise ship resident
band. Enjoy the calm of the lake and bask in the beauty of the mountain scenery
and surrounding. Lunch can be bought on board or visit Senchi River Resort for
the day where one can visit villages on the Volta Lake by boat. Have a sumptuous
lunch and interact with locals or can try some fishing. Return to Accra. Dinner
and overnight at hotel in Accra.
DAY 3
ACCRA CITY
TOUR
After breakfast, depart hotel for a sightseeing city tour of Accra.
You will drive through the administrative and economic districts of Accra, the
capital of Ghana. This 124-year-old city with has a blend of colonial and modern
architecture that summarize her history. You will visit the W.E.B. Dubois Center
for Pan African Culture, Independence / Black Star Square and Kwame Nkrumah Memorial
Park. After lunch in a local Ghanaian restaurant, you will end your tour at the
Arts Centre where you will have an opportunity to use your bargaining skills to
shop from an open-air market for artifacts from Ghana and West Africa. Dinner
and overnight in Accra.

DAY 4
ABURI BOTANICAL GARDEN
Depart for a
drive to beautiful Aburi Botanical Gardens. This eco-paradise was created in 1890
for pleasure and scientific research. It is a habitat for plants and butterflies
from all around the world. After lunch, visit the wonderful Woodcarvers' Village,
a great place to pick up that special souvenir from your trip. Later, return to
Accra. Dinner and overnight at hotel in Accra.
DAY 5
TOTAL SOLAR
ECLIPSE
This day is devoted to witnessing and experiencing the total Eclipse
which will occur along the coast of Ghana for approximately between 4 and 10 minutes.
The eclipse will be visible from within a narrow corridor which traverses half
the earth. The path of the Moon's umbra shadow begins in Brazil and extends across
the Atlantic, northern Africa and Central Asia where it ends at sunset in western
Mongolia. A partial eclipse will be seen within the much broader path of the Moon's
penumbral shadow which includes the northern two thirds of Africa, Europe and
Central Asia. Dinner and overnight at Hotel in Accra.
DAY 6
CAPE COAST CASTLE AND ELMINA CASTLE
Depart for a drive to the Central
Region to tour the infamous Forts, Castles and Slave Dungeons of Ghana. History
will unfold the story of the slave trade which the impact is still felt beyond
the shores of Africa today. Visit the Cape Coast built by the Swedes in 1653 and
was later taken over by the British. This castle also houses the West African
Historical Museum. After lunch, visit the Elmina Castle built by the Portuguese
in 1482 and also known as St. George's Castle. This is the earliest biggest known
structure in West Africa. Dinner and overnight at hotel in Elmina.
DAY 7
KAKUM NATIONAL PARK / POSUBAN SHRINE
Early morning departure
through the Denkyira Kingdom to Kakum National Park, West Africa's most noted
tropical rain forest. Experience the soothing effects being in a tropical rain
forest environment. Choose between either a nature walk through this forest to
discover the wide variety of exotic floral species and the medicinal values they
offer or take a walk on the canopy walkway, 100 feet above the forest floor. After
lunch, spend the remainder of the afternoon at the beach after a visit to the
Posuban Military Shrine where the Asafo companies, (Fanti traditional soldiers),
prepare spiritually for war. These shrines are wonderful examples of how art is
used in the daily lives of Ghanaians. Dinner and overnight at Coconut Grove, Elmina.
DAY 8
ASANTEMAN (Ashanti Empire)
Check out and depart
for a drive through a former slave route to Assin Manso. Visit the site of "Donkor
Nsuo", the former Slave River and market, the final transit point for enslaved
Africans. This is the final resting place for two ancestors whose mortal remains
were returned from the USA and Jamaica and re-interred there. Continue the drive
further north to Kumasi, seat of the Ashanti Empire to explore the legends of
the famous Ashanti, whose legacies are still evident today. After lunch, visit
Manhyia Palace Museum, to obtain firsthand information on the legacies of the
Ashanti Kingdom. A regal history that dates back to 1700 is told with relics and
artifacts. Enjoy a drive through the city with monuments dedicated to the memory
of the great Ashanti people. End the day's tour at the National Cultural Center
which features the Prempeh II Jubilee Museum and various studios of the brass
makers, potter and batik makers. Dinner and overnight at hotel in Kumasi.
DAY 9
ASHANTI CRAFT VILLGES
This day is devoted to visiting
the three famous craft villages in Ashanti. Depart to Ahwiaa, the wood carvers'
village, Ntonso, the home of Adinkra and Bonwire, the Kente weaving village. You
will have the opportunity to see how African crafts are made and to buy directly
from the artisans who make them. After lunch, depart for a drive through the forest
zone to Accra. Dinner and overnight at hotel in Accra.
DAY 10
FAREWELL / DEPARTURE
Day at leisure and last minute shopping. Early evening
transfer to airport for check-in. Call for information and departure dates. INDIVIDUAL
